‘Stomping with the big dogs’ or ‘silently tippy toeing with the mice’?

Being an individual who develops burnout may occur from communication styles. There are times when an individual presents aggressive communication to be noticed by others. Then there are times when an individual is presenting passive behavior by staying silent in the background. The two forms of communication can affect the development of burnout. One of the major causes of burnout is the overload of activities or responsibilities.

When an individual wants to be seen by those of influence or power as a valuable resource the individual will sacrifice his/her needs and volunteer to take on tasks that may take time from self-care. The individual who stays silent may accept tasks provided by others through gaslighting, manipulation, and pressure taking time away from self-care. In order to reduce the possibility of developing burnout assertive communication may allow an individual to keep a balance of responsibilities, tasks, and self-care.
